Mourinho: 'I want to carry on coaching at Roma'

Mourinho: 'I want to carry on coaching at Roma'

Jose Mourinho says he wants to stay at Roma despite his contract with the Italian club expiring next summer.

The 60-year-old joined the club in the summer of 2021 and lifted the Europa Conference League the next year, his fifth European trophy and Roma's first trophy in 14 years.

The Portuguese manager has entered the final months of this contract but has reaffirmed his desire to stay at the Stadio Olimpico beyond 2024.

Speaking after his side's 2-0 defeat to Thiago Motta's Bologna, Mourinho said: "I want to carry on coaching here. With our FFP limitations we need to think about investing in the kids with potential rather than players who are already established and have no room for improvement.

"I haven’t spoken to the owner but I want to carry on coaching Roma. The fans are unique. A separation would be hard for me. And if a separation were to happen it wouldn’t be my decision.”

Roma, who are seventh in the Serie A table, are next in action against Napoli next Saturday.

Endrick watches Real Madrid game for first time since signing for club

Endrick watches Real Madrid game for first time since signing for club

Endrick watched Real Madrid's game against Villarreal at Santiago Bernabeu, the first game the 17-year-old has attended since signing for the club.

The Brazil international, who will officially join Madrid next summer, attended the game at the invitation of club president Florentino Perez after landing in Spain on Friday. He sat in the Palco de Honor box next to Juni Calafat, the club's Chief Scout and the main person responsible for his signing.

Endrick is also expected to meet Pérez on Monday.

The 17-year-old said to RMTV: "It's a dream to be here, it's going to be a great story."

This comes after Endrick and his family attended Real Madrid's training session at Valdebebas earlier this week where he met manager Carlo Ancelotti and his future team-mates.

Endrick's transfer to Madrid from Palmeiras was announced in December 2022. The teenager remained with the Brazilian side for the 2023 season and scored 14 goals in 53 appearances.

He also made his senior Brazil debut this season and has been capped twice by the national team.

Liverpool 0-0 Man Utd: 34 shots for Klopp’s team, Varane impresses, Onana passing key

Liverpool 0-0 Man Utd: 34 shots for Klopp’s team, Varane impresses, Onana passing key

Liverpool were frustrated against Manchester United as they dropped two points at Anfield in a 0-0 draw.

The home side dominated possession and had more chances but the visitors, arriving on the back of their midweek Champions League exit, showed resilience.

Liverpool’s 34 shots are the most in a Premier League game by a team that failed to score since Manchester United’s 38 against Burnley in October 2016 and the fifth most in the competition’s history (since 2003-04 when Opta have the data).

Erik ten Hag, who is enduring a tough season, saw a defiant performance from his team, in particular centre-back pairing Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans. Jurgen Klopp’s team, who had won some recent league games despite not being at their best, could not find a way past a stubborn defence.

Diogo Dalot was sent off for dissent late on but United secured the draw.

Liverpool’s Van Dijk after Man Utd draw: 'Only one team tried to win the game’

Liverpool’s Van Dijk after Man Utd draw: “Only one team tried to win the game’

Getty Images

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk said “only one team tried to win the game” after his side’s goalless draw against Manchester United at Anfield.

Despite facing a team that entered the game with a record of one win in their last five games of all competitions and had a squad that was heavily depleted by injuries and suspensions, Liverpool were unable to beat Erik ten Hag’s side, and missed out on a chance to return to the summit of the Premier League ahead of table-toppers Arsenal.

Liverpool had 34 shots in the game, eight of those being on target, and boasted a possession percentage of 69% but could not manage to find a way past Andre Onana in the away side’s goal.

Van Dijk told Sky Sports: “If you see how we played the game. We had most of the ball and created opportunities. There was only one team that was trying to win the game and unfortunately, it did not happen. That is why it is frustrating because we want to win every game of course, but especially when you play against a team like them (United).

“We should have made better decisions in the final third. Sometimes, we shot the ball too early where we should have passed it. The right decision sometimes was lacking but we will carry on. It is frustrating because we were superior in all aspects from the beginning. They were hoping on a couple of counter-attacks to hurt us on the break but in the end they are buzzing with a point and we are disappointed with a point.”

“They are not in the best phase, so coming here, we were aware. We should have won today. We have big games coming up so we cannot dwell on it for too long and we won’t. We have to learn from this situation and I know that we will.”

Gravenberch a fitness doubt for Liverpool's festive schedule

Jurgen Klopp admits Ryan Gravenberch is a fitness doubt for Liverpool’s festive schedule after complaining of discomfort in his hamstring during Sunday’s stalemate with Manchester United at Anfield.

The Netherlands international was forced off early in the second half and will undergo a scan to establish the extent of the problem.

“It got worse during the game. We hoped it would just go but it didn't,” Klopp said.

“I hope it's not serious, but we have three games in the next 10 days and we have to wait. I don't know if he will be part of them."

Klopp was left to reflect on a frustrating afternoon for his side as they failed to make their dominance count against United.

“Besides the result, there were a lot of positives,” he added.

“In some moments we were unlucky and in others we were in a bit of a rush. Counter-press was outstanding but we should have had more finishes on target. A goal would have changed everything.

"We tried pretty much everything - changed system, altered players. Everything could have worked out if we had made one better decision.”

McTominay says captaining Man Utd against Liverpool is: 'Biggest honour of my career"

McTominay on captaining Man Utd against Liverpool: 'Biggest honour of my career"

Scott McTominay says that captaining Manchester United during his side's goalless draw against Liverpool is the "biggest honour" of his career.

In the absence of club captain Bruno Fernandes who missed the game through suspension, 27-year-old McTominay led United out at Anfield playing as a number 10 behind striker Rasmus Hojlund.

It is the second time the Scotland international has captained United but the first time that he has led the side out in a Premier League game.

McTominay, who progressed through the club's youth academy before making his debut for the club in 2017, told Sky Sports: "I am proud to have led us out today. It is the biggest honour of my career, captaining this football club. I've done it twice now. I've been a young boy. I know the system and the process that it takes to come through. I am thankful to be in the position and I want to go for more.

"You never know in football, things could happen. Speculation comes and goes. But for myself, as long as I have a clear mind and I do my best on the football pitch with no excuses, I don't really care what anyone else says or what anyone else thinks about me.

"I just want to play well for this football club and that is final."

United are next in action against West Ham United at London Stadium next Saturday.

Jesus praises ‘amazing’ Havertz

Jesus praises ‘amazing’ Havertz

Gabriel Jesus has heaped praise on Arsenal team-mate Kai Havertz after the pair both scored in Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion.

Jesus, 26, opened the scoring at Emirates Stadium with a header at the back post early in the second-half. Arsenal created several chances during the game, but Havertz sealed the victory for the north London side in the 87th minute, latching onto a through ball from Eddie Nketiah, before slotting past Bart Verbruggen to make it 2-0.

The 24-year-old had endured a difficult start to life at Arsenal since making his £65million move from Chelsea in the summer transfer window but has begun to show his worth in recent weeks, scoring three goals in his last five Premier League appearances.

Jesus described the Germany international’s impact on the Arsenal team, telling Sky Sports: “He has brought a lot. We always joke about how he won a Champions League final against me and now I want to win one with him. He is an amazing player. The way he plays, he is so strong, and tall and has amazing quality. He helps us a lot.

“The way he runs is massive. He is always fighting and helping the team. We are very happy that we have him.”

Arteta praises Arsenal's patience in front of goal after Brighton win

Arteta praises Arsenal's patience in front of goal after Brighton win

Mikel Arteta has praised his side’s patience in front of goal after they beat Brighton 2-0 at the Emirates.

Arsenal created several chances during the game but two second half goals from Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz prevented a repeat of the 3-0 loss to Roberto De Zerbi’s team in May.

“Outstanding. Incredible from start to the end,” said Arteta.

“Big compliment to the team against a top side. We had an incredible performance and fully deserved to win the game I think. I have to praise them because I know how hard it is and what Brighton do to teams. We didn’t allow that to happen and I’m so happy.”

Arsenal limited Brighton to few chances and Roberto De Zerbi conceded they were by far the better side. but it was how his players dealt with Brighton’s unique style that most pleased Arteta.

“The way Brighton play against you individually and the way they press you when they go man to man, you have to be so accurate and precise and intelligent to do what we’ve done today and they’ve done it.

“We had to patient but at the same time we had to be really determined against this team. The second you have doubts against this team they open you up, they start to frustrate you and dominate with the ball. We didn’t do that. We didn’t allow them to do that. We showed a lot of maturity, and a lot of intelligence. This game against them requires them to be really intelligent. We had some issues in the camp and with Jorginho too we had another one. It’s five, six now. So, we need players.”

Havertz sealed the win in the 87th minute with his third goal in five Premier League matches.

After a slow start following his move from Chelsea in the summer it appears he is now finding his shooting boots.

“I think he had them. His confidence is growing and he feels more secure on that field. Scoring one is helping to score the second one. I think it’s four in six now. He should have scored a header today in a good position. Overall, though, taking that apart, the performances that he shows on the pitch, his aggression, he’s top. Really good.

If we generate more, the probability for scoring will be higher. That’s the only thing that we can focus on. We have great players that can define games and finish actions. Today we needed too many - especially in big spaces - too many situations to finish the game. That was the fear, especially after half time, that it could be one of those days because the moment you give something to this team they’ll take it.”

Brighton's full-back crisis has deepened with a right knee injury suffered by Joel Veltman during the first half of today's 2-0 defeat at Arsenal.

The Dutchman tried to continue after treatment, but he was forced off and now joins long-term casualties Pervis Estupinan, Tariq Lamptey and Solly March.

Head coach Roberto De Zerbi said: "We are going to find a new solution. Maybe (goalkeeper) Jason Steele can be the new full-back!

"Joel is an important player, an important problem, because he feels pain in the knee and when there is a problem with the knee it's difficult."

De Zerbi had no complaints about the result at the Emirates. He said: "Arsenal played much better than us. They deserved to win the game. We suffered a lot. Arsenal are one of the best, maybe this season the best team in the Premier League.

"We are not used to suffering in this way, we are used to controlling the game, the play, but I'm really proud of the performance of my players, because we suffered with the right attitude, the right mentality."

Jarrod Bowen finished the scoring in the 74th minute, scoring the home side's third. Paqueta was also instrumental for West Ham's side, assisting all three goals.

The victory sees West Ham rise above Brighton and Hove Albion, who lost 2-0 to Arsenal earlier, and Manchester United, who face Liverpool at Anfield later, into seventh place in the Premier League. Wolves meanwhile remain in 13th position.
