Liverpool's opening offer for Slot rejected by Feyenoord

Liverpool's opening offer for Slot rejected by Feyenoord

Liverpool have had an opening offer for Arne Slot rejected after making the Feyenoord head coach their preferred choice to succeed Jurgen Klopp.

The Anfield club’s pursuit of Slot did not emerge until earlier this week as they prioritised discretion and a desire to show Feyenoord respect before Sunday’s Dutch Cup final, which they won.

That approach is sure to be maintained as Liverpool enter negotiations with the 2023 Eredivisie champions and their highly-regarded CEO Dennis te Kloese with the club knocking back an opening offer of €9million (£7.7m, $9.6m).

Liverpool are also in contact with Slot, who is enthusiastic about the possibility of moving to Merseyside.

Liverpool have made Arne Slot their preferred choice to succeed Jurgen Klopp when the manager leaves this summer and have opened talks with Feyenoord.

The Anfield club’s pursuit of Slot did not emerge until earlier this week as they prioritised discretion and a desire to show Feyenoord respect before Sunday’s Dutch Cup final, which they won.

That approach is sure to be maintained as Liverpool enter negotiations with the 2023 Eredivisie champions and their highly-regarded CEO Dennis te Kloese.

They are also in contact with Slot, who is enthusiastic about the possibility of moving to Merseyside.

Liverpool are conducting a thorough process and will continue to assess other candidates, although Slot is the focus of their attention at present having emerged as the leading contender to succeed Klopp.

Ten Hag calls Man Utd criticism 'embarrassing': 'The comments are a disgrace'

Ten Hag calls Man Utd criticism 'embarrassing': 'The comments are a disgrace'

Erik ten Hag believes criticism of the manner of Manchester United’s progress to the FA Cup final is “embarrassing” and labelled some comments aimed at his team “a disgrace”.

United defeated Championship side Coventry City in a penalty shootout following a 3-3 draw, in which Ten Hag’s side squandered a three-goal lead in the final 20 minutes.

Goals from Scott McTominay, Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes had appeared to put United on course for a comfortable victory but Ellis Simms, Callum O’Hare and a stoppage-time Haji Wright penalty forced extra-time, with Viktor Torp’s 120th-minute goal for Coventry ruled out for a marginal offside following a VAR decision.

When Chelsea have bad days they are callow, uncertain, disorganised, naive, wasteful.

Without Cole Palmer against Arsenal — they offered nothing — and Mauricio Pochettino's pre-match comments came back to haunt him.

Euro 2024 squads set to be increased to 26 players

Euro 2024 squads set to be increased to 26 players

Teams at this summer’s men’s European Championship in Germany are set to be allowed to name squads of up to 26 players instead of 23.

UEFA had said it was considering the proposal during last month’s international break, with some national team coaches expressing their desire to see squad sizes increased over the fortnight. Earlier this month, the proposal was discussed at a workshop of national team head coaches in Dusseldorf, Germany.

The decision has not yet been confirmed by UEFA but that is expected to come following a meeting of its Executive Committee later this week.

The deadline for teams to submit their squads is June 7, a week before the opening game of the tournament.

Following the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, which saw football paused for several months and added a great burden to the calendar for the following year, UEFA allowed teams to take 26-player squads — instead of the traditional 23-player selections — at the delayed Euros in the summer of 2021.

FIFA also kept 26-player squads for the men’s World Cup in 2022.

Trossard hails 'perfect night' as Arsenal put five past Chelsea

Trossard hails 'perfect night' as Arsenal put five past Chelsea

Leandro Trossard described Arsenal's 5-0 victory over Chelsea on Tuesday as the "perfect night".

The hosts scored five goals and kept their 21st clean sheet of the season in all competitions to move three points clear at the top of the table — with Liverpool and Manchester City still to play.

The victory represents Arsenal's biggest ever win over their London rivals in any competition.

Trossard, 29, opened the scoring with his 10th goal of the campaign before braces from ex-Chelsea forward Kai Havertz and Ben White completed the rout.

"Clean sheets help you win games," Trossard told TNT Sports.

"We know that if we score a goal a lot of times we can go on to win 1-0, but we always want to score more and tonight was the perfect night where we scored loads of goals.

"Credit to everyone, because everyone works so hard defensively, including attackers and midfielders."

Arsenal are in next action against north London rivals Tottenham on Sunday.

Bank account of Pique's Kosmos embargoed in RFEF corruption investigation

A bank account belonging to Gerard Pique’s sports and entertainment company Kosmos has been embargoed by the judge investigating alleged corruption at the Spanish football federation (RFEF) during the presidency of Luis Rubiales from 2018 to 2023.

Pique and Kosmos were an intermediary in the deal which saw the Spanish Supercopa move to Saudi Arabia in 2019. That initiative was worth €240million over six seasons to the then financially struggling federation — with Kosmos also due a commission of €24m for their role, according to a report by Spanish media outlet El Confidencial.

The investigation under which Rubiales and a number of former federation executives have been arrested in recent weeks, codenamed Operacion Brodie, was set in motion by a formal legal complaint in May 2022 to a court in Majadahonda by Miguel Angel Galan over Kosmos’ involvement in the Supercopa deal.

Man Utd U18s beat Man City to complete league and cup double

Man Utd U18s beat Man City to complete league and cup double

Manchester United Under-18s added the Premier League Cup to their league title with a 2-1 victory over Manchester City on Tuesday night.

Ethan Wheately, 18, scored two goals before half-time to put Adam Lawrence's side in control at a sold-out Leigh Sports Village, Greater Manchester.

Stephen Mfuni scored a late consolation for City but it wasn't enough to prevent United from completing a league and cup double.

United wrapped up the Premier League North title with two games to spare with a 2-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers last Tuesday.

First-team head coach Erik ten Hag was at the club's Carrington training ground on Tuesday evening to congratulate the team on their title win.

Harry Amass, Louis Jackson, Habeeb Ogunneye and Louis Jackson have all been rewarded for their fine form with places in Ten Hag's first-team squads in recent months.

The cup win caps a memorable season for Lawrence's side, who have racked up 19 league wins out of 22 and one defeat. The impressive run to the title included a strong 17-game unbeaten streak.

Gallagher insists Chelsea are 'putting the effort in'

Gallagher insists Chelsea are 'putting the effort in'

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher says he and his team-mates are “putting the effort in” after questions from supporters about their “fight”.

During Chelsea’s 5-0 loss at Arsenal last night, a fan held up a banner which read, “I don’t want your shirt, I just want you to fight for ours”, prompting Gallagher — Chelsea’s captain for the match — to be asked about the squad’s desire.

“We definitely are putting the effort in,” Gallagher said to TNT Sports. “I know how much it means to all the boys.

“It’s a very young squad with not much experience as a team in the Premier League.

“This season we’ve had a lot of ups and downs. We’re still improving and working as a team to get to that next level.

“Today was one of those days where we were nowhere near it and we need to dust ourselves off, look at the performance, where we can improve and all the mistakes we made that we can put right.”

Chelsea remain ninth following the heavy defeat by Arsenal and are next in action on Saturday when they travel to fourth-placed Aston Villa.

Unai Emery has given Aston Villa a massive boost by extending his contract as head coach until 2027.

The 52-year-old Spaniard joined from Villarreal in October 2022 and is on course to secure Champions League qualification while also reaching the Europa Conference League semi-finals.

Emery’s work has seen him linked to a number of vacancies elsewhere — however the former Arsenal boss has moved to end any speculation by committing his future to the Midlands side.

The Dutchman is on the shortlist having satisfied many of the relevant criteria set out during the club’s recruitment process.

Arteta has 'all the sympathy in the world' for Pochettino: 'Someone I love and admire'

Mikel Arteta says he has “all the sympathy in the world” for Mauricio Pochettino after his Arsenal side beat the Argentine’s Chelsea 5-0 at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night.

Arteta played alonside Pochettino when he was on loan at Paris Saint-Germain from Barcelona in 2001-02, and has kept in contact with his former team-mate since becoming a manager.

“With everything that he’s been through and everything that he’s been doing,” Arteta said.

“He knows that. I’ve been on the other side as well. He’s doing a great job, I think when you look at this team and analyse every second of them, they deserve to win many matches, they deserve to win against big teams. He’s doing a really good job so hopefully things will turn around and be as he deserves.”

Pochettino’s Chelsea had only been beaten twice in 2024 before tonight’s loss to Arsenal. Both defeats came at Wembley, to Liverpool and Manchester City in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup respectively.

Tonight’s result leaves them ninth in the Premier League, however.

For Arsenal, the win temporarily puts them three points ahead of Liverpool and four ahead of Manchester City. Liverpool have one game in had, while City have two.

Asked whether his relationship with Pochettino would effect the feeling of winning during a title race, Arteta added: “No. I love winning. He would try to do the same. When you talk about sympathy and someone I love and admire, for sure, I want the best for him.”

Mauricio Pochettino says he was disappointed with Chelsea's "low energy" during their record-breaking 5-0 defeat to Arsenal on Tuesday night.

The defeat — Chelsea's 11th of the campaign — was the Blues’ heaviest in a London derby since losing 6-0 to Queens Park Rangers in March 1986, and their biggest ever loss to Arsenal in any competition.

"We said at half-time we cannot approach the game how we started the first half, but we started again showing too low energy and didn't compete in the way that we needed to compete," Pochettino told TNT Sports.

"When we conceded the third goal it was so easy for Arsenal to manage the game.

"The first 15 minutes of the game and the first 15 minutes of the second half, we lost the game there.

"It's a difficult performance because it's not nice to see your team playing like this from the beginning of the game when you're supposed to have full energy."

Chelsea — ninth in the table with six games remaining — are next action against Aston Villa on Sunday.

Amad deserves more minutes than he's been given, admits Ten Hag

Amad deserves more minutes than he's been given, admits Ten Hag

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has admitted that Amad deserves more game time than he has been given.

Amad, 21, sustained a knee injury during United’s pre-season match against Arsenal in the United States in July and was sidelined until December.

Since making his comeback, Amad has made six appearances in all competitions but is yet to start a game.

“Amad deserves it, but don’t forget he had a long period in the season injured, so we rebuilt him and now he has had some opportunities and (made) a real contribution,” Ten Hag said.

“(On Sunday) He played in the position that is not his best position. He started as a striker and then he had to play in the midfield, so he did well.”

Even though Amad scored a dramatic last-minute winner to knock Liverpool out of the FA Cup in extra time in March, his opportunities have been limited.

Ten Hag puts this down to the competition in the squad for the attacking spots in the starting XI.

“We have a number of players in that area, there is big competition,” the Dutchman added. “He already deserved more game minutes, I would say, but I have to choose there.

“We have (Alejandro) Garnacho, Antony, we have Omari Forson. We have a number of players in that position and we have to make choices there. But I am very happy with his performances and his progress, I see his qualities and his assets can really contribute to our game.”
