Sources: Liverpool set sights on surprise Timo Werner move

Liverpool are plotting a shock move for Chelsea star Timo Werner, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The Merseysiders are eyeing up a potential deal for their 2019 summer target as they assess possible forward signings.

A Liverpool source has told Football Insider that their interest in Werner, 26, is still at the early stage and no discussions have taken place with Chelsea.

But it is an intriguing development that Werner is even on the radar of the Merseysiders given his two mediocre Premier League seasons to date.

However, Jurgen Klopp and his recruitment team believe the Germany international would be better suited to Liverpool’s style of play than Chelsea’s.

They think Werner can thrive in a high-tempo style that wins the ball up the pitch and can then release him into one v one situations.

Liverpool are potentially in the market for another senior forward amid doubts over the future of Mohamed Salah, who is out of contract next summer.

They have signed Luis Diaz, Fabio Carvalho and club-record capture Darwin Nunez this year but are losing Sadio Mane, Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi.

Liverpool were interested in triggering Werner’s RB Leipzig release clause in the summer of 2019.

At one stage, they were strong favourites to sign a forward who had been a long-term target of their recruitment team, but in the end Chelsea signed him for a fee of around £45million.

Werner has struggled to live up to his billing and has been linked with a return to his native Germany.

He has made 89 appearances for Chelsea, scoring 23 goals and supplying 21 assists.
