Rodrigo has declared that City gave their maximum effort in the penalty shoot-out defeat to Real Madrid in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions league after drawing 4-4 on aggregate.

The visitors struck first at the Etihad Stadium, with Rodrygo firing in on the rebound after Ederson saved his initial effort.

Pep Guardiola‘s dominated the game after the setback and eventually broke the resolve of the Spanish side, with Kevin De Bruyne blasting us level after 76 minutes.

Neither side could find a winner in normal time or extra time, with Carlo Ancelotti’s men emerging victors 4-3 on penalties.

“Nothing much to say. Congratulations to Real Madrid and congratulations to my teammates for the effort. We gave everything,” said Rodrigo after the defeat.

“Nothing to regret. This is football sometimes. This is the trick of this competition. This shows how difficult it is to win it, we did it last season, I’m very frustrated to be honest for what happened.

“Sometimes it is difficult to explain. Tomorrow, we will need to digest the loss.

“Tomorrow we have to wake up and stand up because we have two more competitions to fight for.

“We need to stand up. We need a positive mentality and find an ambition which right now is difficult to find, but tomorrow we will find it.”

The midfielder also touched on the defensive nature of Real Madrid’s display and looked ahead to this weekend’s FA Cup semi-final clash with Chelsea.
