Michael Edwards will help to shape the post-Jürgen Klopp era at Liverpool after agreeing to return in a high-powered role, heading football operations for club owner Fenway Sports Group.
His official title will be FSG chief executive of football, succeeding Mike Gordon as the day-to-day decision-maker on all footballing matters. Gordon, the FSG president and a key figure in Liverpool’s rise, intends to reduce his involvement in the sport. He will remain on the FSG board into which Edwards will now report.
Edwards, who had previously rebuffed interest from Chelsea and Manchester United, will also be charged with helping to identify a second club, from which Liverpool can attract global talent, and he will lead a restructure of Liverpool’s footballing hierarchy.
