The Blades have made another move in the summer transfer window, securing the services of a left-sided operator who has amassed over 150 senior appearances at the age of just 23.
Sam McCallum is a Blade, following the expiration of his contract at Norwich City, with the versatile performer penning a four-year deal at S2. "Sam fits the profile and we are looking forward to welcoming him into the group," said Blades chief, Chris Wilder.
"He will bring energy to an area of the field where it is essential to be fit and athletic. Sam loves to go forward and his Championship experience will be vital as we look to win games and be very competitive in a notoriously tough division."
Born in Canterbury, Kent, McCallum grew up in the nearby Herne Bay, starting his footballing journey at his local non-league club before spending time at Jamie Vardy's V9 Academy. In August 2018, he was snapped up by then League One side Coventry City and made his debut in the EFL Trophy tie against Cheltenham Town in the November, before going on to make seven further appearances during the 2018-19 campaign.
The following season, McCallum established himself amongst the Sky Blues ranks and his impressive form saw Norwich City pay £3.5 million for his services during the transfer window of January 2020, he was immediately loaned back to Coventry and went on to score three times in 35 appearances in all competitions.
McCallum was loaned back to Mark Robins' side for a third spell for the duration of the 2020-21 campaign, where he scored once in a further 42 outings and again spent time out on-loan from Carrow Road during the 2021-22 season, featuring 19 times for QPR, scoring two goals. Back in Norfolk, McCallum looked to establish himself and last season featured 34 times for the Canaries.
"It is a big club and I enjoy the style of football," said McCallum of his switch to the Blades. "I've always liked the football which the manager has implemented into the club and hopefully I'll fit hand-in-hand with that. The football United play is the football I want to be playing for the next couple of years.
"I am looking forward to all the ambitions the manager has got here. I think the project going forward looks like it is going in the right direction again, so I wanted to be part of it."
McCallum is United's second capture of the summer following Jamie Shackleton last week, whilst goalkeeper Adam Davies has also re-signed.
